Per colt's online database, serial number indicates manufacture in 1862. Web the revolver is serial number 88848, which indicates that it was produced early in colt’s 1863 production, which ran from approximately #85,000 to #150,000. Web doesn't look like there is a cartouche on the grips, but the 66,000 serial range does put it in 1862, and pretty much everything was going to the military, especially early war.
